Data with Heart: Evolving the Shelter Pet Story

The most compelling creative challenges often arrive with the tightest deadlines. Our relationship with the Shelter Pet Data Alliance began with an intense two-week sprint, where our team developed the narrative, visual language, and final animation from scratch to meet an urgent launch window. That initial version was an immediate success, but it also laid the groundwork for a deeper exploration of the brand. We recently revisited the project, taking the opportunity to refine the storytelling and elevate the animation to better reflect the organization’s growth. With a script crafted by Amy McVey, the piece serves as a welcoming, vibrant introduction to a data-driven cause, proving that even the most complex information can be delivered with warmth and empathy.

Guided by lead animator and visual storyteller Steven Johnson, the project’s aesthetic was built on a foundation of "hand-drawn" warmth and strict brand color harmony. The production began with rigorous visual development and storyboarding by Thomas Giebler, ensuring every frame felt intentional and supported the narrative flow. To maintain the tactile feel of the animation, we focused on organic movement and textures that humanized the data-centric subject matter. The experience was rounded out by Evolution Audio, whose bespoke sound design provided the final layer of emotional resonance. The result is a project that balances the urgency of its origins with the sophisticated polish of a studio-led collaboration.
